laundry rant

I hate doing laundry
no
let me clarify
I hate folding laundry
I hate putting folded laundry away

I enjoy putting dirty clothes in my washer
then clean clothes in the dryer
because
I adore pressing the buttons
and I like the way my washer and dryer
look

but this part...

this part I hate
I hate folding 5 loads of laundry
and the only reason I'm folding
is cause I'm tired of stepping over
5 baskets of
clean
unfolded
laundry

and I hate the pile of socks that's left
after all the clothes are folded

those fucking socks make me feel like
I'm in never ending purgatory

cause I can never
never ever
find a match to every sock
and I always end up with
like 16
single socks
how can that be?

do you have the answer?
cause I know it happens to you too

I also hate putting clean folded laundry away
I keep telling myself
and my kids
that they are old enough to put their
clean folded clothes
away
themselves

they most certainly are

but inevitably
I find previously clean folded clothes
at the bottom of their laundry baskets
all mixed up with dirty clothes

shoot me

and then there's the last stray basket
of clean clothes
that I find in the kitchen
after I think I've finished folding
everything
and I feel like the dude pushing the boulder up the mountain
or the dude with the wax wings trying to reach the sun

dude

  1. I feel exactly the same way, except I don't have children. You could probably do my laundry without even noticing. And what is up with socks? Why are they so tiring? And where do they go? What I do love is the luxury of all the clean clean clothes once it's done. And pushing the buttons.

  2. I SO HEAR YOU!!! I totally could have written this post. I'm spoiled- my hsuband actually DOES the laundry. He hauls it downstairs, puts it in the washer, puts it in the dryer, hauls it back up. But I really can't stand the folding and putting away part, either. I feel great when it's done and I enjoy the calm of knowing where the clean clothes are; of knowing there are drawers with easily accesible outfits in them... but I just do not like folding and hanging all of those clothes!!

  3. I do love the smells and the warmth. Most of the time, though, the baskets function as portable dressers.

  4. Oh, yes. I sort of have Maya putting her own clothes away. Every once in a while she'll whine about it, then I stop washing her clothes and boy is she sorry!

She drives me crazy though because she'll try on something clean, find she's outgrown it, and put in the dirty clothes. Then I wash it, but it still doesn't fit... see where I'm going with this?

  5. Oh, fucking hell yes. It is neverfuckingending.

Now I know why my mother, who had 6 kids, taught me how to do my own when I was in the second grade. That's right. Been doing my own laundry since the second grade.

My husband? His mother was still doing his laundry when I met him. He was 28.

  6. I think I have all the matching socks. Must do, because surely otherwise I couldn't have so many single ones as well. They must have gone through the wormhole. One day, one of us should go through the wormhole and we could have tea together.

Oh, and if you hadn't noticed, that story about the dude and the rock was about housework.

  7. Frankly, I do not mind doing laundry. It never ends but it's so mindless. I do it constantly. And I fold it either out of the dryer or off the line and THEN put it in the basket. I don't like putting it away. That part I do not like.
When I had a bunch of kids at home, I would put the folded laundry on shelves in the laundry room. Everyone had a shelf.
"Come get your laundry!" I could cry out.
And then I do the same over and over again. And they eventually, usually, did.

  8. sisyphus...

sisyphean-according to the American Heritage Dictionary, "endless and unavailing, as labor or a task."

and icarus is the son of daedalus known for an attempt to escape crete by flight, which ended in a fall to his death.

uh, so, yeah...don't try to escape the laundry. sorry i can't be of more help.

  9. I think we are pretty much the same person. We only have white socks, ALL of us, that way we don't have to worry about finding matching ones. True.

  10. I hear you. Especially about the socks thing. I can't wait until my boys are old enough to deal with their own socks -- the pile of slightly yellowed, clean socks is enough to drive anyone bonkers. And as for the baskets of laundry. I just have one and I fold each load as it comes out of the dryer. Otherwise, I truly would go insane.

  11. Ditto on second grade... the rule was if you were tall enough to reach the buttons, we did the laundry (same mom as Cristin).
My child does his own under duress with swearing. It still makes me insane when he tries on something and it ends up back in the floor, only to get re-washed. Also, I spent $30 on socks last night for the kid due to the sock gremlins...

  12. Me Too. It never ends. 10 huge loads a week, minimum. I hate the socks the most. I stack the dirty baskets vertically because my laundry room is a tiny closet. I make announcements like today I am waist deep in laundry, or I'm up to my eyeballs, literally, in dirty clothes. Somebody has always lost something crucial that I can't find too. The only funny thing, which is bordering on annoying now, is when my husband finds something not his in his drawers, he hangs it somewhere ridiculous for me to find, like from the ceiling fan. Still makes me laugh, though some days I want to make him eat it. Such are the burdens of my life :)

  13. I do the same thing. I leave little piles of clean folded laundry on the older girls' beds and then later find it in the dirty clothes pile or in Olivia's case, hidden under her bed.

It's a vicious cycle (CYCLE! HAha!)

Right now I have three baskets of super neatly folded laundry with everything that needs hung up sitting on top of said baskets with enough hangers for those clothes right on top of them. And I'm writing you a comment instead of putting them away.

  14. In college I would buy new underwear for the sole purpose of avoiding laundry. I still hate it, but at least I don't have to compete for machines in a basement anymore...

  15. My dears, there are bad things and good things about having your husband home all the time. It's a bad thing to have him suffering pretty much constant pain. But it is a damned good thing to have him doing laundry. Now and then, it's a bad thing (you would be astonished at some of the things he's bleached) but overall, I am humbly grateful.
    Love you.

  17. loved this, loved your photos too.
I think this is one of the main reasons I do not have children. I couldn't handle the laundry, esp the sock part.
    Bless you!

Your fairy is called Columbine Icedancer
She is a bone chilling bringer of justice for the vulnerable.
She lives in mushroom fields and quiet meadows.
She is only seen when the bees swarm and the crickets chirrup.
She wears lilac and purple like columbine flowers. She has icy blue butterfly wings.
